Summary
Adrenal insufficiency (AI) is the medical term for the body’s adrenal glands not producing enough of the vital stress hormone, cortisol. Cortisol is usually measured in blood samples, but we are developing ways to diagnose adrenal insufficiency by measuring cortisol (and a very similar hormone, cortisone) in saliva samples, which will lead to needle-free testing.
There will be 3 parts to the STARLIT programme:
In this study, (STARLIT-1), we are looking to see whether there are big differences in blood and saliva cortisol and cortisone levels within the same individual when samples are taken very close together in healthy adults.
STARLIT-2 will compare the blood sample test to the needle-free test in healthy volunteers, and then STARLIT-3 will look at the effectiveness of our needle-free test in patients with AI.
